Roof remediation and solar PV installation delivering long-term energy savings

Belmont Park School, Walthamstow, London

Belmont Park School required urgent roof remediation following three years of persistent leaks. The project delivered a full roofing solution and integrated solar PV installation, eliminating the water ingress and generating 30% of the school’s electricity on-site.

Works were carried out by CWG Group, a Langley Approved Specialist Contractor, on behalf of the London Borough of Waltham Forest.

The school’s single-ply roofing system had developed multiple leak points, with saturated insulation eliminating any thermal performance and driving up heating costs. Funding constraints delayed remedial works for approximately three years.
As a special needs facility operating throughout the programme, the works required careful management to avoid disruption to staff and students.

An initial survey identified potential deck upgrade requirements on the primary roof area. To maintain project viability within the council budget, the installation was relocated to the structurally sound pitched roof section, removing the need for deck renewal works.
Langley’s TA25W torch applied membrane was installed with a warm roof configuration and tapered insulation to address drainage. Electronic leak detection testing was completed before and after the PV installation.
The solar PV system used Tier 1 panels and a battery-ready inverter, future-proofing the installation for storage without requiring a secondary inverter. The full system is covered by Langley’s 25-year insurance guarantee across both the roofing and solar components.

  • TA25W roofing system installed with a 25-year insurance-backed guarantee covering both roofing and solar PV
  • 9 tonnes of CO₂ emissions reduced annually
  • 30% of total grid energy now generated on-site
  • 4 to 5 year financial payback period
  • Works completed during term time with no disruption to staff or students
  • CWG Group delivered a careers assembly and £1,000 donation to the school’s educational fund
