Reducing structural loading to safely refurbish a live school roof
Ongar Primary School, Essex, UK
Ongar Primary School required refurbishment of its original pitched roof dating from 1994. The works needed to be delivered over a six‑month programme while the school remained fully operational.
The challenge
The original tiled roof dated back to the school’s construction in 1994 and investigation works identified deterioration to several elements of the roof covering and associated flashings.
The approach
Langley supported the specification of lightweight Decra metal tiles to reduce structural loading on the existing roof structure while maintaining the appearance of a traditional tiled roof. Extensive perimeter scaffolding and internal crash decking were installed to support safe working within a live school environment.
The outcome
- Replacement roof covering installed using lightweight metal tiles
- Reduced structural loading on the existing roof structure
- Safe replacement of the lantern rooflight
- School remained operational throughout the 26-week programme
