The BMI Apprentice of the Year final brought together 20 of the UK’s most talented roofing apprentices, and we were proud to see five Langley apprentices reach the final.
Over two days, finalists took part in a range of practical and technical challenges designed to test their knowledge, problem-solving abilities and workmanship. They also heard from former finalists, whose experiences demonstrated how stepping outside your comfort zone can help build confidence and create new opportunities.
For each of our finalists, the competition provided an opportunity to learn, grow and challenge themselves. Here’s what they had to say about their experience.
George McIlhiney – Swingler Roofing
George described reaching the final as a hugely rewarding experience.
“I really enjoyed the final and even though it was very nerve-wracking presenting in front of the panel of judges, it was a great experience. I was really pleased to win.”
Dean commented that although George is naturally quiet, his outstanding attention to detail and workmanship helped him stand out throughout the competition.
Reflecting on George’s development, Emma from Swingler Roofing said:
“George’s confidence has grown during the apprenticeship, and he is always proud to show what he has learnt with Langley when they are working on projects. The high level of training has helped raise skills across the business and encouraged other young roofers to join the Langley apprenticeship scheme.”
Joel Nottage – All Aspect Roofing
For Joel, the final was another milestone in a journey that has significantly boosted both his skills and confidence.
“It was a great experience, and the apprenticeship has really boosted my confidence. I was very nervous in the presentation at the final, but proud of myself too.”
Joel spoke positively about his apprenticeship experience and the learning environment at Langley, particularly the opportunity to practice and develop skills on the training rigs before applying them on site.
Keyan Miller – Ashe Roofing
At just 17 years old, Keyan was one of the youngest apprentices in the competition. Having joined Ashe Roofing earlier this year, he has quickly made an impression with his enthusiasm, positive attitude and willingness to learn.
“I love working outdoors and learning new skills. Every day is different, and it’s great to see a project come together.”
Despite being new to the industry, Keyan has already worked on a wide range of projects across the country and continues to show huge potential.
Millie Sanders – Leicester City Council
Millie was the only pitched roofing finalist from Langley and embraced the competition as an opportunity to challenge herself, build new connections and further develop her skills.
Millie hopes to one day run her own business and has already gained experience across several trades. However, roofing has become her passion thanks to the opportunity to work outdoors while continually developing new skills.
Reflecting on her apprenticeship experience, she highlighted the supportive training environment and quality facilities available to apprentices.
“Everyone is committed to learning, and it feels comfortable to ask questions. The rigs and training set-up are excellent.”
Jayden Gohil – STARK Construct
Although unable to attend the awards ceremony due to being on holiday, Jayden’s achievement in reaching the final is one he is rightly proud of.
“I was very grateful to be a finalist for BMI Apprentice of the Year. It is a great achievement. I would like to give a big thank you to Langley and STARK for all the help I have been given.”

“We are very proud of all five finalists. Their attitude and hard work got them to the final. They are all a pleasure to teach, their confidence has grown and the standard of workmanship is exceptional. They are ahead of where they need to be with still a year to go on their course. They should all be incredibly proud of what they have achieved.”
The competition highlighted the exceptional talent coming through the roofing industry and the lasting impact apprenticeships can have on developing confidence, skills and future careers.
