Developing Future Talent: SkillBuild at Langley

Last week, we were proud to host the SkillBuild Roofing Competition at our Training Centre, bringing together our apprentices to showcase their skills and take part in a national competition.

SkillBuild is a UK-wide programme designed to challenge apprentices to test their abilities, demonstrate their craftsmanship and benchmark themselves against others across the country. For many, it’s an important step in their development building confidence, gaining recognition and strengthening their future career opportunities.

Showcasing Skills in Action

Throughout the day, our apprentices took part in a live skills challenge, demonstrating their technical ability, precision and attention to detail. Working under assessment conditions, competitors completed a series of tasks including measuring, marking and installing roofing elements using traditional methods, all observed and assessed by industry judges.

The Journey Beyond the Competition

SkillBuild is more than a one-day event. It forms part of a national series of heats, with the top performers progressing to the national final later this year. From there, selected competitors may go on to represent the UK on the international stage — an incredible opportunity and a testament to the level of skill and dedication within the industry. Even taking part at this stage is a significant achievement, giving apprentices valuable experience and something to be proud of as they continue to develop their careers.

A Proud Moment for Langley

Hosting this competition also highlights the strength of our Training Centre and our commitment to developing the next generation of roofing professionals. It was fantastic to see the apprentices in action, supported by colleagues and assessed by experienced judges, all contributing to a great day of learning, collaboration and achievement. Congratulations to our 3 top finalists: Thomas Ealing, Lewis Quinn, and Mason Whelan.

Looking Ahead

With more competitions taking place across the country in the coming months, we look forward to seeing how our apprentices continue to progress and wish them the very best for the next stage.
